Canoeing in the Wilderness

Description

In July of 1857, Henry Thoreau set off for two weeks on what he called 'an excursion' through the Maine woods.   The region had escaped the rapid development and industrialisation that had already marked much of the United States and it was sparsely populated, with only the occasional logger or Native American 'disturbing the tranquility of nature'.
