For a while we’ve wondered about creating a space where we could share our passion for travel. We also wanted to give back.

A space to lose ourselves. Where John Steinbeck’s Russian Journal rubs shoulders with Abba’s Guide to Stockholm.  Where Jonathan Raban tips his hat to Martha Gellhorn. Where Richard Scarry’s Busy Busy World tries very hard to sit still next to William Grill’s Shackleton.

The Travel Book Company was set up to do these things.

But also to be a place to give back to the remarkable places we love reading about and travelling to. Places that should never be taken for granted.

And that’s why we use the profits from our sales to support a range of community and conservation initiatives in Tanzania.

For a Life of Travel

We’ve been lucky to travel across the globe.  Childhoods in USA, Zambia, New Zealand and years working in some remarkable parts of wild Africa set us up for a nomadic life.

We certainly haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on our list.

What we’ve learnt, in this uncertain and increasingly polarized world is that Mark Twain was right.  Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness… broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth.

That’s why we’ve opened The Travel Book Company. We want to help you get lost.

Come and see us

We have a beautiful shop just outside Shaftesbury in Dorset.

Come and get lost in the world of travel.
