River adventurer Jim Payne takes us on a kayak voyage in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, copying a trip made by the naturalist Henry David Thoreau in 1839.  

In the process, Jim finds himself chasing Thoreau's ideas and exploring their relevance to the modern world.
